Technology

Technology Studies
Technology Studies is taught throughout the College and is divided into three streams: Materials, Systems and Information.

Junior School

Students study Integrated Technology which includes Wood, Metal, Plastics and Electronics, and a semester of Food and Fibre.

 

Middle School
Students can choose from a number of elective units.

Materials-

Glass: involves creation of projects using stained glass and mosaics.
Wood: Woodcraft involves using different timbers to make a series of craft items.
Wood covers the use of tools and woodworking techniques to create familiar items.

Food & Fibre: three food electives are offered which cover important components of nutrition, food for health, safety, hygiene, food presentation and knowledge of food preparation and techniques.

The electives are:

- Food Around The World
- Spice Up Your Life
- Food Presentation and Preparation.

Systems
Auto: “Handy Car Care” covers maintenance and accessory items associated with cars.
“Small Engine Workings” covers the operation of both 2 and 4 stroke engines.
“Drive to Survive” covers road laws and road craft, basic driving skills and buying and maintaining a car.

Electronics:
“Nifty Electronics” and Systems Electronics cover the manufacture and operation of circuit boards and other electronic components and allow students to develop an understanding of the control of electronic devices.

Information
Desktop Publishing: Includes the history of computers, use of Publisher/Word and an introduction to Pagemaker. Students use scanners and digital cameras to produce an electronic publication.

Business Based Computing:
The use of the Microsoft Office suite of programs is covered as well as application of new software in the wider community.

Webpage Design and Multimedia:
Students work on creating several websites with web editing software, learn to use computer animation software and integrate an animation in a multimedia presentation.

Computers in the Workplace:
Covers the computer skills that are important in the workplace and the organisation of time to effectively complete tasks.
Software Solutions: Students learn to use various computer tools including Spreadsheets and Visual Basic programming to solve a number of problems.

Information Technology:
Covers word processing, spreadsheets, and provides a good all round preparation for the use of ICT at Senior School.

Food technology


Senior School
VCE/VCAL/VET Programs at Mount Erin College cater for the diversity of students.

Materials-

Design and Technology-Wood and Design and Technology-Glass explores the properties and origins of the respective materials used for specific purposes, investigates the tools, equipment and machines used in processing the materials and design, produces and evaluates products for the mass market. Promotion and marketing of products are also considered.

Hospitality:
Students work towards Certificate II in Hospitality (Food/Kitchen Stream) which covers training and skills development in kitchen, food and beverage service.

Systems-

Systems & Technology: Electronics involves the investigation, make-up and operation of a range of systems (including robotics). It covers how systems work, the electronics, electrical and mechanical features, design and operation of integrated technological systems as well as the impact of such systems on people, society and the environment.

Auto:
VCAL and VET students work towards gaining Certificate II in Automotive Technology, an accredited TAFE qualification.

Information-

Information Technology Units 1 & 2: focuses on how individuals and organisations use and can be affected by information systems. Solutions to problems include a fete poster, the creation of a website and the design of a computer system and a network.

Information Processing & Management:
Focuses on why information is needed, how it is processed and managed and the roles of people, equipment and procedures. The use of information in and by organisations is covered as well as the impact of changes in information systems.
