Junior School English
English for Year 7 & 8 students at Mount Erin is aimed at developing skills in the four major areas of Writing, Reading and Speaking and Listening. At Years 7 & 8 it is expected that most students are working at Level 5, building and consolidating their skills. We endeavour to cater for all students as individuals using these levels as benchmarks.

Year 7 English
In order to satisfy the requirements of the Year 7 English course students must submit the following Assessment Tasks:

Middle School English
At Year 9 English is a core subject as well as offering a range of electives.
In order to satisfy the requirements of the Year 9 Core English course students must submit the following Assessment Tasks:

  • Opinionative Writing
  • Oral Response (‘StoryTelling, ‘Yarn’)

Unit 2

YEAR 9 English Electives
‘Having a Say’
This course aims to encourage students to speak out. They will be involved in a variety of activities both formal and informal where they get the opportunity to express their ideas and opinions verbally.

Lights, Camera, Action!

The study of film is an important component of any senior English class. This course engages students in analysing film and documentary. They are encouraged to critically view film and filmmaking, working to develop a deeper understanding of this medium.

Literature

This is the study of classical writing. This reading based subject challenges students to read widely and come to terms with symbolism and reading between the lines. Once the reading is complete the student is then asked to produce pieces of writing emulating the styles studied.

Creative Writing
For those students who enjoy writing this course offers the opportunity to indulge their passion. Students will be exposed to a range of writing types and styles as well as being provided with opportunities to develop their own style.

Write to Work
The objective of this unit is to assist those students who are struggling with the general English curriculum. The course aims to assist students in developing and enhancing their general skills and preparing them to become functionally literate in the world outside school.

 

Year 10 English
In Year 10 students are given the opportunity to choose from three different English courses.

Standard English

YEAR 10 English Electives
Creative Writing
This course is offered to enable students to further enhance their English writing and oral skills. They will be given opportunities to write in a diversity of styles and for a variety of audiences.
Students will analyse a variety of texts in this unit. They will be expected to read and contribute to discussions of the texts, as well as writing a number of pieces of work based around the styles of text and writing studied.

Pre VCE English
This subject aims to prepare students for VCE English, challenging them beyond the standard English course requirements.In order to satisfy the requirements of Year 10 Pre VCE English students must submit the following Assessment Tasks:

Foundation English
The objective of this VCE accredited study is to assist students requiring further skill and language development.

VCE English
This study aims to develop competence in the understanding and use of English for a variety of purposes sufficient to meet the demands of post-school employment, further education, and participation in a democratic society.
It emphasises the integration of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking.
It values student diversity and particularly encourages learning in which students take responsibility for their language development and thus grow in confidence and in language skill and understanding.

Foundation English
The Foundation English course is designed for students who need additional time and assistance to strengthen and refine their literacy skills. The course will integrate speaking, listening, reading, viewing and writing to improve students’ skills and confidence in comprehending and responding to texts.

Literature

Literature involves the study and enjoyment of a wide range of literary texts - classical, popular, traditional and modern. Its distinctive focus is on the use of language to illuminate and give insight into the nature of experience.
Literature is an interactive study between the text, the social, political and economic context in which the text was produced, and the experience of life and of literature that the reader brings to the text.
